‘Thirty years ago I was moved into 24a when it was just MSB housing, not Department of Housing. I had that horrible tar on the floor, no back door and no hot water. I told my two small children and one baby that we were having an adventure, even down to putting up a tent. At that time, friends did so much for me, and it was home in no time, which lasted three years, then I was moved to a 3rd-floor flat in Trinity Avenue and was told this was only for a couple of months, but once again it turned into years. Then one day at the local rent office I was given a key, and told the house I was to look at, that I could stay in “until I was carried out in a wooden box.” I started moving in the next day, and have been here ever since. I raised my three kids here, my youngest daughter went to Lance Kindergarten, then to St Brigid’s and Fort Street. Later she drove Millers Point buses. I worked part time in local hotels, the Palli, Nelson, and Hero. This was the most amazing and diverse community I had ever known in my whole life, and even though I was a “blow-in”, it wasn’t long before I knew I was home!’
